WORLD gymnastics champion Carlos Edriel Yulo, as expected, made his golden debut in the 30th SEAGames PH 2019 Sunday night, easily ruling the all-around finals of the men’s artistic gymnastics competition at the Rizal Memorial Coliseum.
In front of an adoring hometown crowd, Yulo, 19, tallied 84.900 points in six apparatus to vanquish Vietnamese bets Dinh Phuong Thanh and Le Thanh Tung, who scored 82.350 and 81.700 points, for the silver and bronze medal, respectively,
The all-around gold is one of seven in Yulo, the reigning world floor exercise titlist, is aiming to sweep.
Yulo admitted there was pressure to perform in front of the home fans after his victory in the 48th Artistic Gymnastics World Championship in Stuttgart, Germany last October “It’s very different. I’m pressured because I know I have a chance to win a (gold) medal. I prefer competing without a chance of a medal. There, I can really give my best,” Yulo said bared.
Yulo topped his pet event, the floor exercise with 14.650 points, placed third in pommel horse with 13.600, finished second in the rings with 13.600, second in the vault with 13.600, and capped his performance with a first-place finish in the horizontal bar with 13.750 points.
He resumes his bid on Tuesday with the first set of apparatus.
