The art or sport of paddling a canoe for recreation, as an adjunct to some other activity such as fishing or hiking, or in competition. Canoe races are normally held on flat water for 1-, 2-, and 4-man or woman teams over distances of 500, 1000, and 10,000 meters for men and 500 meters for women.
Kayak events are held on both flat-water course and on white-water slalom courses for 1-, 2- and 4-man and woman crews.
The flat water distances are the same as for the canoe. The winner is determined solely by time.
In the slalom events, the individual or team is judged both on the time required to navigate through the gates and the manner in which one covers the course, with penalty points for hitting or failing to pass a gate added as seconds to the competitor’s time.
